A Global Shapers Pittsburgh Project

The locals' guide to Pittsburgh's immigrant-owned restaurants.

We find the restaurants, cafes, and markets run by people who brought their food to Pittsburgh from somewhere else, and we share the stories of the people behind them. A few times a year, we fill a dining room for a sit-down dinner with the owner.

About

Why we built this guide

Some of the best cooking in Pittsburgh happens in small, family-run places that are easy to miss. CulturePGH is a volunteer project of the Global Shapers Pittsburgh Hub to help locals find them, and to give the people behind them a chance to tell their own story.

Find

We map the places

Restaurants, cafes, and markets around the city, mostly immigrant-owned, that we like or that people have told us about. Every place starts out on our radar.

Feature

We tell their stories

When an owner wants to take part, we visit, photograph the food, and write up how they came to Pittsburgh and what they cook. Those places become featured partners.

Gather

Sometimes, we sit down together

A few times a year, a partner restaurant hosts a CulturePGH dinner: a ticketed evening where guests hear the owner's story over a multi-course meal.

Dinners

The occasional dinner

Our sit-down dinners are a highlight, not a schedule. We host one when a partner restaurant is ready, roughly once a season.
